What is Deduction?

Deduction is a code-breaking game, packed with deceptive villains, international travel to exotic locales, and a pressure-inducing countdown clock. But since I don't know that many evil geniuses, can't afford to send all of you around the world, and don't want to pressure you too much, this version of Deduction simply asks you to crack the code in 12 guesses or less.

What is the code? Glad you asked. The code is a pattern of 4 coloured marbles. These are chosen from the 6 colours available, and the same colour may be chosen more than once. For each guess, choose a pattern of marbles, based on the feedback from the previous guess. For your first guess, there is of course no feedback to draw from, so let your senses guide you. Feedback is in the form of up to 4 small marbles, which will appear beside you current guess.

  • A small orange marble indicates one element of your guess is of the correct colour, and in the correct position.
  • A small white marble indicates one element of your guess is of the correct colour, but in the wrong position.
  • A small invisible marble indicates one element of your guess is of the wrong colour, and in the wrong position.

Obviously, the goal is to see feedback with 4 small orange marbles, thus indicating you have correctly cracked the code. If you do not correctly identify the pattern in 12 guesses or less, you've unfortunately failed to unlock the restraining device you were trapped in, and the villain has escaped with all the money, gold, diamonds, big fluffy birds, or whatever it may have been that he, or she, had stolen.

For a breakdown of the mechanics of this implementation, and for a couple of shortcut tricks, please see How to Play Deduction.
