How To Play Deduction

Play • How to Play

To play Deduction, you have to start guessing the code. Each guess is one row in the 13 row grid, with the first guess located on the row at the top of the grid. The 13th row, at the bottom of the grid, is the code. It is kept hidden, otherwise it wouldn't be much of a secret code now, would it?

To choose a colour for you guess, click on any of the 6 coloured marbles beside the playing grid. A small "x" will appear on the marble to indicate that is your current colour selection. Clicking on any of the 4 slots in the row of the current guess will fill in that slot with the currently selected marble colour. You may change your mind as many times as you like before submitting your guess. Once all 4 slots have been filled with a coloured marble, a question mark will appear beside the row. This simply indicates you've filled in all the slots, and you may submit your guess by clicking the question mark. Remember, you may change any of the colours in your guess as much as you like, but once you click the question mark, you are on to the next guess.

When a guess is submitted, the question mark will be replaced with feedback for that guess. Feedback is in the form of 4 small marbles, with the following meanings:

  • A small orange marble indicates one element of your guess is of the correct colour, and in the correct position.
  • A small white marble indicates one element of your guess is of the correct colour, but in the wrong position.
  • A small invisible marble indicates one element of your guess is of the wrong colour, and in the wrong position.

If your guess from the 12th row is still incorrect, the game is over and the code will be revealed to you.

A couple of shortcuts

If you have already submitted a guess, there are a couple of shortcuts you may use to select the colours for your next guess.

  • Clicking on the feedback beside a previously guessed row will fill in your current guess with the same colours and orders as that previous guess. This simply lets you build off a previous guess quicker.
  • Clicking on a coloured marble from a previous guess will set the currently selected marble colour to that colour. This can save a bit of time, as you do not have to change the colour from the colour selector beside the playing grid.

A couple of options

Restart tells me you have given up. There is no hope, and you want to quickly and quietly wipe away the current situation and play again with a new code.

Solve tells me you have really given up. But you are at least curious to see what the code was.
